FREE CROCHET PATTERN – Cute Envelope

This is the perfect cute little gift for the person who has everything.  I made these for my sons to give to their girlfriends as an alternative to gift wrapping their gifts.  It would also make a cute alternative gift card envelope.  The inserts pictured can be purchased from my etsy shop as a pdf or printed onto card and mailed directly to you.

This free crochet pattern is available in 3 sizes.  The first size (small – 7.5cmX4.5cm) is available here for free.  If you would like the additional sizes of large (12cmX7.5cm) and medium (10cmX5.5cm) as well as the inserts then please head over to my shop and help keep me in wine and chocolate!

Materials

  • DK rico 100% mercerised cotton in required colour (this cotton has a sheen to it) 1 50g ball will make all the sizes in this pattern with some to spare.
  • 3mm crochet hook
  • Darning needle
  • Scissors
  • Heart button

Abbreviations

  • SC Single Crochet
  • SS Slip Stitch
  • CH Chain
  • SC DEC Single Crochet Decrease
  • BLO Back Loops Only

Pattern Notes

This pattern is written in standard American terms.  The chain one does not count as a stitch unless otherwise stated.

Small Envelope  7.5cm X 4.5cm

R1 CH17, SC in second CH from hook, SC in each CH across (16)

R2-13 CH1, SC in same ST as CH1, SC in each ST across (16)

R14 WORKING IN BLO (this will form a seam where your envelope will fold) CH1, SC SC in same ST as CH1, SC in each ST across (16)

R15-27 WORKING IN BOTH LOOPS, CH1, SC in same ST as CH1, SC in each ST across (16)

R28 WORKING IN BLO (this will form a seam where your envelope will fold) CH1, SC SC in same ST as CH1, SC in each ST across (16)

R29 CH1, SC DEC, SC in the next 12 ST, SC DEC the last 2 STs (14)

R30 CH1, SC DEC, SC in the next 10 ST, SC DEC the last 2 STs (12)

R31 CH1, SC DEC, SC in the next 8 ST, SC DEC the last 2 STs (10)

R32 CH1, SC DEC, SC in the next 6 ST, SC DEC the last 2 STs (8)

R33 CH1, SC DEC, SC in the next 4 ST, SC DEC the last 2 STs (6)

R34 CH1, SC DEC, SC in the next 2 ST, SC DEC the last 2 STs (4)

R35 Complete 2 SC DEC (2)

AfterR35 CH1 and turn work then SS around the outside of the whole piece.  This will mean SS along the ends of rows etc.  This will neaten off the edge in preparation for sewing the piece together.  When you read the start of your envelope CH2 and SS to close this will form your button hole.

Fasten off and weave in your ends.

Lay your piece flat with the point at the top and your BLO seams facing away from you.   Fold the bottom of the envelope in half where your seams are and sew along the edges to form the pocket.  Place and sew your button being sure to line it up with your button hole.
